Blossoms in a Hostile Landscape
Blossoms in a Hostile Landscape
As a gay man and native resident of Louisiana, I have a complicated relationship with this state. I love so much of our culture, the food, and the beauty of our swamps. But growing up was difficult, and I still don’t feel comfortable in a lot of spaces. I often feel that any moment, something or someone will come out of their hiding hole and snap me up.
“Blossoms in a Hostile Landscape" is a photographic art project that juxtaposes the vibrant lives of LGBTQ+ individuals born and raised in Louisiana against the murky swamps and marshes of their home state. Using these natural landscapes as a metaphor for the often hostile attitudes we have faced and continue to deal with, the project aims to capture a diverse range of voices. I hope to highlight the resilience and beauty of LGBTQ+ people while inviting viewers to reflect on the complexities of understanding and accepting one’s own identity when surrounded by hate and hostility. Through this series, the swamp becomes a canvas for storytelling, celebrating the strength of those who thrive against the odds. (See photo for creative direction.) Please complete the form below.
